A Quest

September 4, 2008 | Dr. Jeff Wells

Some of you may remember the quest by artist Susan Beebe to paint, sculpt, or otherwise artistically depict all 300 of the regularly occurring Boreal birds. She has labored several years on this amazing project and now wants to show the world some of these beautiful and striking creations in a new show opening Wednesday evening, September 17, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at the Jonathan Frost Gallery in Rockland, Maine. The Steve Lindsay Trio will provide live jazz, blues, and boogie-woogie at the opening.

You can find out more about the gallery at:

There are some very striking pieces on display at her web site including ones related to the tar sands and birds and many gorgeous, evocative paintings of owls, warblers, and many other birds. I love them all but am struck by "Yellow-rumped Warblers Foraging in an Alder Swamp" and "Spring Warblers" and both of the "Great Gray Owl" portraits.

I'll be there to see the works in real life. Come and join us if you are in the area or want an excuse to visit Maine!

Here's one of the paintings Susan made for her project, this one is the Barred Owl (click image for larger version):
